Nikhil Gupta's Bungalow

Client: Nikhil Gupta

A private bungalow in Alibaug for a client who travels widely and lives deliberately. At 15,000 sq ft the brief was generous but undemanding — the client asked only for spaces that settle into the landscape without demanding attention.

The design reflects an ease of occupation. Rooms open to the outside in multiple directions, light moves through the day, and the distinction between inside and outside is consistently softened. A home that holds its occupant lightly.

The early site photographs show a building that looks like it picked its spot rather than was placed on it. The overhangs do their job quietly. That was the brief, and the structure is already keeping its end of the bargain.

A 15,000 sq ft private residence in Alibaug — designed for a client who travels widely and asked only for spaces that feel easy to inhabit.

Dining room with long table, pendant lights and the owner's art, Nikhil Gupta Bungalow, Awas, Alibaug
The dining room — a long table, a cluster of pendants overhead, the client's own art on the wall. The room already has a life to it.

The entrance porch — a Buddha figure, stone benches, a solid timber door. A moment of stillness before the house begins.

The pool terrace under a timber-slatted pergola — outdoor seating, a fire pit, water alongside. Given the same consideration as any interior room.
Under-construction view of bungalow planned around coconut palms, Awas, Alibaug, 2024
Under construction, Awas, 2024. The coconut palms on site were a constraint from the start — the building was planned around them.
Arrival sequence under sloping timber-and-steel canopy, Nikhil Gupta Bungalow, Alibaug
The arrival — a long car porch under a sloping timber-and-steel canopy, planting on both sides. The approach to the house was given as much thought as the house itself.
