Fifteen years after the ITM Kharghar campus was built, growth in student intake demand, coupled with an FSI limit increase for institutional projects, necessitated an expansion to the building in the complex. The challenge in extending this campus was threefold: demolish a part of the complex to create room for a bigger building; enable the campus to operate unhindered while construction work is in progress; continue the language and style of the architecture in the new building so that the whole design has a cohesive appearance.
The design establishes a dialogue with the existing structures through shared material references while introducing a clearer organisational logic — a central spine that connects new and old, with faculty offices and seminar rooms branching off either side.
This project was followed, in 2005, by the adjacent MBA Hostel Towers, which brought a further 85,000 sq ft of student accommodation to the same campus. Team Design's decade-long involvement with ITM represents one of the firm's deepest institutional relationships.
